Lecture/Workshops

I'm winding down my teaching schedule and the classes I offer due to family concerns. As a result I'm only offering one workshop. Thanks for your interest!

Lecture/Trunk Show
Landscape Quilting from Alaska to Wisconsin.
This lecture and trunk show feature many of my quilts, their stories and a humorous look at my life as a quilter.  I use a Power Point presentation to illustrate tips and tricks for designing landscapes, drafting patterns on graph paper, sources of inspiration and my quilting adventures from Alaska to Wisconsin.  A brief overview of my technique using a tear-away foundation to piece quilts introduces quilters to a fast method of quilt top construction. (Fee is $300)

Forest Scenes
One Day Workshop
In this one day class students will create a landscape featuring birch trees, background and foreground foliage. They will learn how to create a natural foreground, to cut out realistically shaped tree trunks, branches and saplings, and learn how to shade them with dye markers or pastels creating three dimensional effects. Cathy will supply markers and pastels for the students. Kits are required and range from $25 -$30. Cathy's fee is $475
.

Projects may be slightly different than pictured.

Please contact Cathy for any additional information. Thanks!

  1. Do you have a max number of participants for a one day workshop?

    1. I like 15 students, routinely have 20 and occasionally have workshops with 25! More students mean that I hustle from table to table all day. Usually once I get everyone going then each student works at his/her own pace and I'm there to watch over their shoulders and offer tips and advice, etc. :)

    2. I need to tell you a short tale. I took my autistic daughter to see your Mary Poppins quilt when it hung in Paducah, because she likes all things Disney. She rarely talks to strangers or makes eye contact with them. when we go to museums she moves through pretty quickly. When she saw your quilt she looked at it for a long time. Then she began to go up to other people in the museum, look them in the eye, grab their arm and say,” There’s a quilt over here you need to see! It has Mary Poppins on it! Thanks, Elise Kalika, Lexington, Ky

    3. Elise, that is one of the best compliments I've ever had. Thank you so much for telling me about it and I'm so glad your daughter had fun there. I assume you have seen the blog posts I wrote as I made the quilt? I started making the quilt in June, 2017 in case you want to look at them. What a sweet story - thank you so much!

  3. Can class students use their own inspiration photo for your strip landscape class or do they have to use your patterns?

    1. Yes, I have had students bring their own photos to class but they usually don't accomplish much past the early designing stages. My kits come with precut strips and they are usually in order of placement so students are usually sewing by lunch and adding appliques late afternoon. When they have to design their own, it takes a lot of time. Plus, they need to bring a TON of different fabrics when they come to class. I'm happy to work with folks who want to do their own thing, they just won't get as far as everyone else in the class. :)

    1. Hi and thanks for the interest. I can get you my contact information if you email me. cathyptpATwi.rr.com. That AT is @, I'm hoping to cut down on spam. I have a feeling that this particular workshop will be cancelled or postponed because of the ongoing Covid crisis but we'll see.

    1. Not at this point. I have a lot of personal/family issues hitting me these days so I just can not take on another project. I should probably watch some other's zoom lectures to see how they are done though.
Thanks for the interest Kim. :)

    1. At this point no, I don't have DVDs or anything online like other quilt teachers have. Someday I'll have to figure all that out I think, plus I need a place to record and right now I'm in a small room in the basement. We were going to move this year and that went south with covid, but I'm hoping I get a sewing room with windows in my next house. I really need to think about this, don't I.
      Thanks for writing. :)
